About Jim Locksley

One day when I was walking around my college campus, I saw a group of people with these yellow tripods. At first I thought they might be photographers, but they sure looked like strange ones! I went up and asked them what they were doing, and it turns out they were a group of students from a construction class who were surveying the land for a project. I was fascinated. I was able to sign up for the class the next semester, and while it didn't stick or change my professional trajectory, it did create a new hobby for me! Ever since then, I've been interested in construction, from surveying to management to the actual building. I figured running a blog about it would give me a nice excuse to keep up my interests!

3 Different Types Of Garage Door Drive Systems

by Mike Brewer

If you are looking to install a new garage door, you need to decide what type of garage door drive system you want to use. Here are the top three different types of garage door drive systems that are most commonly used in homes.

Computer Controlled Systems

Many modern garage door's drive systems use a computer to control how the garage door opens and closes. These systems do not use a chain or a screw in order to open or close the doors. This type of system has a computer that is mounted above the garage door  that controls how the garage door operates. Computer controlled systems do not require a lot of extra headspace and work well in garages that have low ceilings.

Chain Driven Systems

Another popular type of garage door drive systems is a chain driven system. These systems are incredibly common and have been used for years. You have probably seen a system like this before.

These types of systems use a metal chain that is located on a set of tracks either in the middle of the garage door or on both sides of the garage door. The chain pulls the garage door open and closed. It can be paired with a motor and can be used in conjunction with a remote control to make it easier to operate your door.

Chain driven systems are generally easy to maintain and take care of. However, chain driven systems can be loud, so you'll want to think about the noise before installing one. The noise shouldn't be that much of an issue if your garage door is located next to your kitchen or living space. However, it the sound could be a little annoying if it is located next to your bedrooms.

Screw Driven System

Finally, the third most common type of garage door drive system is the screw driving systems. These types of systems use a steel rod lifting device to open and close your garage door.

Just like the chain driven system, the screw driven system does not require a lot of maintenance and can be paired with an electronic remote control. These types of systems are generally quieter than chain driven systems.

Be sure to talk to the contractor you hire to install your garage door (such as one from Doors/Windows Unlimited Inc) about the type of drive system that are going to install. Make sure you can keep up with the maintenance required for the drive system and that you can tolerate the sound that the drive system creates.
