One day when I was walking around my college campus, I saw a group of people with these yellow tripods. At first I thought they might be photographers, but they sure looked like strange ones! I went up and asked them what they were doing, and it turns out they were a group of students from a construction class who were surveying the land for a project. I was fascinated. I was able to sign up for the class the next semester, and while it didn't stick or change my professional trajectory, it did create a new hobby for me! Ever since then, I've been interested in construction, from surveying to management to the actual building. I figured running a blog about it would give me a nice excuse to keep up my interests!

When the foundation of a building suffers damage, it can be a serious problem to encounter. Unfortunately, there are many individuals who lack understanding about this common issue. This problem can be exacerbated due to common myths and misconceptions that people may have concerning foundation problems.

Myth: Foundation Problems Only Develop With New Construction

A common idea people have about foundation damage is that this problem only arises shortly after a building has been completed. While it is true that the months after a building has been completed can be when these issues are the most likely to come up, due to the foundation settling, it is possible for buildings of almost any age to suffer this problem. For this reason, individuals should be on the lookout for potential foundation problems, regardless of the age of their building. In particular, you should be mindful of cracks forming in the walls or ceiling, as this can indicate the structure is shifting in a way that it is not designed to withstand.

Myth: It Is Impossible To Repair A Damaged Foundation

When a building suffers foundation damage, it can be easy for individuals to assume that it will simply be impossible to effectively repair the damaged foundation. Yet, this is not the case, as there are a variety of ways that an experienced foundation contractor can repair these damages. For example, if the foundation is settling unevenly, this could cause it to split and crack. By excavating the soil to expose the damaged part of the foundation, the contractor will be able to repair the cracks and reinforce the foundation by placing stabilizing rods under it.

Myth: There Are No Steps For Preventing Foundation Damage

Due to the severity of foundation damages, individuals should be taking steps to help lower the risk of this damage occurring to their property. Often, erosion is a major source of foundation issues. As the soil that supports the foundation starts to erode, the weight from the structure will be distributed in a very uneven manner, which can increase the risk of the foundation cracking. Additionally, excessive moisture in the foundation can weaken it, by soaking into the concrete and degrading it. These issues can be largely avoided by taking steps to improve the drainage of the soil near the building's foundation. This can be done through the use of gutters, drain tiles, and other upgrades that will help with directing the flow of water away from the structure.
